The UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization’s (UNESCO) International Hydrological Programme has hosted in Paris, France, an international symposium entitled “New directions in urban water management” from 12-14 September 2007.

The three-day symposium examined new proposals and technologies for dealing with the growing pressure on freshwater supplies, the poor administration of existing water resources, and the general degradation of the environment. Symposium participants heard contributions from the heads of nine projects that the Programme has coordinated since 2002, and were briefed by urban water management officials from countries ranging from Iran and Oman to France, Serbia and Uganda.
