WRI Calls for Voluntary Commitments on Sustainable Development
story highlights

The World Resources Institute (WRI) notes the call for governments, the civil society and the private sector to register specific sustainable development commitments in a “Compendium of Commitments,” in response to the possibility that Rio+20 may not result in concrete actions.

It also highlights The Access Initiative's “Three Demands Campaign" on Principle 10 of the Rio Declaration, on access to information, public participation and access to justice.

1 May 2012: The World Resources Institute (WRI) has called for governments, civil society and the private sector to register specific sustainable development commitments in a “Compendium of Commitments.” The call is made in response to the possibility that the upcoming UN Conference on Sustainable Development (UNCSD, or Rio+20) may not result in concrete actions.

The recently-published article notes that the registered commitments or goals would be time-bound and aim to achieve already existing global goals, rather than negotiate new targets and agreements.

The piece also highlights The Access Initiative’s (TAI) “Three Demands Campaign,” which requests governments to attend Rio+20 with specific commitments relating to Principle 10 of the Rio Declaration on Environment and Development, on access to information, public participation and access to justice.
