UNCSD PrepCom III Side Events Highlight 20th Anniversary of Rio Earth Summit, Green Jobs

On the final day of the UNCSD PrepCom III a number of side events took place, including on green jobs, biodiversity, sustainable transport and trade.

A special ceremony was also held to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the 1992 Rio Earth Summit.

15 June 2012: On the third day of the Third Meeting of the Preparatory Committee (PrepCom III) for the UN Conference on Sustainable Development (UNCSD, or Rio+20) in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, over 30 side events took place, addressing topics such as green economy, sustainable transport and biodiversity.

Side events held on 15 June 2012 included: a Special Ceremony to Commemorate the 20th Anniversary of the 1992 Rio Earth Summit, organized by the Government of Brazil; Green Economy and Trade: Assessing challenges and opportunities, organized by the International Trade Centre, the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) and the International Centre for Trade and Sustainable Development; Green Jobs: A chance for youth!, organized by UNEP, the International Labour Organization (ILO) and the Government of Tanzania; Contributing to the Greening of Economies and Poverty Alleviation, organized by the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), the UN Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD), the UN International Strategy for Disaster Reduction (UNISDR) and the World Health Organization (WHO); The Economics of Ecosystems and Biodiversity (TEEB) for Water and Wetlands, organized by the Scientific and Technical Review Panel of the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands; Biodiversity and The Future We Want: The Strategic Plan for Biodiversity 2011-2020, organized by the Secretariat to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD); and Connecting the Dots: Science, the IPCC and the policy picture, organized by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), UNEP and WMO.
