PrepCom III Side Events Showcase High Seas Protection, Urban Transport

Side events taking place on the first day of the Third Meeting of the Preparatory Committee (PrepCom III) for the UN Conference on Sustainable Development (UNCSD, or Rio+20) included Towards an Agreement for Protecting the High Seas, organized by the High Seas Alliance, and Expanding the Use of Electric Mobility: Options for sustainable urban transport, presented by UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs (DESA).

13 June 2012: Several side events took place in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, on 13 June 2012, the first day of the Third Meeting of the Preparatory Committee (PrepCom III) for the UN Conference on Sustainable Development (UNCSD, or Rio+20). The events addressed drought policy, climate finance, oceans protection, population, sustainable urban transport, and forest governance.

The events are: the High Level Meeting on National Drought Policy (HMNDP), organized by the World Meterological Organization (WMO), the UN Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD), the Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO), the UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), the UN International Strategy for Disaster Reduction (UNISDR), and the Center for Strategic Studies and Management (CGEE); Ensuring that Climate Finance is an Effective Driver of Sustainable Development, organized by Transparency International; Towards an Agreement for Protecting the High Seas, organized by the High Seas Alliance; People and the Planet: Population, consumption and the environment, presented by the Royal Society of the UK, the UN Population Fund (UNFPA), and the African Institute for Development Policy; Expanding the Use of Electric Mobility: Options for sustainable urban transport, presented by the UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs (DESA); and Forests in a Global Bioeconomy Requires Wise Governance and Management, organized by the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences and the Swedish Forestry Agency.
