UN Committee of Experts on GGIM Concludes Second Session

The second session of the Committee of Experts on Global Geospatial Information Management (UNCE-GGIM), a three-day expert group meeting, adopted resolutions on the provision of high-quality and reliable geospatial information to deliver sustainable social and economic development, and on the development of a global knowledge base for geospatial information.

22 August 2012: The second session of the Committee of Experts on Global Geospatial Information Management (UNCE-GGIM) has met to discuss major trends and challenges in geospatial information management. The three-day expert group meeting addressed implications of the Rio+20 conference, development of a knowledge base for geospatial information, a Global Map for Sustainable Development and more.

The meeting took place at UN Headquarters in New York, US, from 13-15 August 2012, gathering together more than 200 experts from Member States in the fields of surveying, geodesy, geography, cartography, mapping, remote sensing, hydrography, meteorology and environmental protection. Participants adopted several resolutions, including on the provision of high-quality and reliable geospatial information to deliver sustainable social and economic development, and on the development of a global knowledge base for geospatial information.

The UNCE-GGIM was established to be the official UN consultative mechanism on place, locality and geography. It plays a leading role in setting the agenda for the development of global geospatial information, while promoting its use to meet key global challenges.
