22 March 2012: The Secretariat of the Pacific Regional Environment Programme (SPREP) hosted a workshop in Nadi, Fiji, for regional experts to review the species action plans of its 2008 – 2012 Regional Marine Species Programme.

The regional action plans currently include dugongs, marine turtles, and whales and dolphins, and highlight priority areas and actions to guide conservation work on these species in the region. According to SPREP, these efforts will be supplemented by an action plan on sharks to strengthen existing joint work by the Secretariat of the Pacific Community (SPC), the Forum Fisheries Agency and SPREP.

Lui Bell, SPREP Marine Species Adviser, explained that the review identifies those themes and activities that are no longer relevant, and accomodates new and emerging issues. [SPREP Press Release]
