IOSEA Marine Turtle MoU Gains 33rd Signatory

Malaysia has signed the Memorandum of Understanding on the Conservation and Management of Marine Turtles and their Habitats of the Indian Ocean and South-East Asia (IOSEA Marine Turtle MoU), making it the 33rd state to join the agreement.

Four species of marine turtles are recognized as nesting in Malaysia.

IOSEA20 September 2011: Malaysia has joined the Memorandum of Understanding on the Conservation and Management of Marine Turtles and their Habitats of the Indian Ocean and South-East Asia (Indian Ocean – South-East Asian Marine Turtle Memorandum of Understanding, or IOSEA Marine Turtle MoU). The MoU takes effect on 1 December 2011.

The agreement was signed by the Director-General of Malaysia’s Department of Fisheries, on 19 September 2011, in Kuala Lumpur. This makes Malaysia the 33rd signatory State of the IOSEA Marine Turtle MoU. Four species of marine turtles are recognized as nesting in Malaysia, with the states of Sabah, Sarawak and Terengganu contributing 80 percent of the country’s annual nesting. [IOSEA News Release]
