CCAMLR Adopts Measures on IUU Fishing and MPAs

The Commission for the Conservation of Antarctic Marine Living Resources (CCAMLR) made ship identification numbers of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) mandatory for toothfish vessels licensed to fish in the Convention area, extended the transhipment notification system to krill vessels, agreed on a general framework to develop marine protected areas, and established a dedicated CCAMLR Ecosystem Monitoring Programme Fund.

4 November 2011: At its annual meeting, the Commission for the Conservation of Antarctic Marine Living Resources (CCAMLR) adopted measures to: fight illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing; create marine protected areas (MPAs); and enhance the management of krill fisheries. Proposals on market-related measures and on port state measures, however, were not adopted.

The meeting took place in Hobart, Tasmania, from 24 October-4 November 2011. CCAMLR made ship identification numbers of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) mandatory for toothfish vessels licensed to fish in the Convention area. CCAMLR also: extended the transhipment notification system to krill vessels; agreed on a general framework to create MPAs; and established a dedicated CCAMLR Ecosystem Monitoring Programme Fund.
