CBD Requests Information on Biodiversity-Safe LMOs

The CBD Secretariat is asking Parties to the Biosafety Protocol to submit scientifically sound information based on risk assessments of living modified organisms (LMOs), for possible use in the identification of LMOs that do not have adverse effects on biodiversity or human health.

CBD25 January 2012: The Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) is asking Parties to the Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety to submit, by 30 April 2012, information on the identification of living modified organisms (LMOs) that are not likely to have adverse effects on the conservation and sustainable use of biodiversity, taking also into account risks to human health.

Parties are asked to submit any scientifically sound information available on risk assessments regarding the receiving environment of the LMO to assist in the identification of LMOs that are not likely to have adverse effects on biodiversity or human health, as well as on the criteria used for the identification of such LMOs.
