CBD Holds Meeting on Implementation of Cities Plan of Action

The meeting discussed, among other issues, opportunities for stakeholders to collaborate in the implementation of the plan of action, and a road map and preparations towards the second summit on local authorities and biodiversity.

CBD15 September 2011: The second meeting on the implementation of the plan of action on sub-national governments and other local authorities on biodiversity 2011-2020, organized by the Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), discussed, among other issues, opportunities for stakeholders to collaborate on the implementation of the plan of action, and a road map and preparations towards the second summit on local authorities and biodiversity.

The meeting was held from 5-6 September 2011, in Bonn, Germany, and gathered representatives of the Advisory Committee on Cities and of the Global Partnership on local and Sub-national Action for Biodiversity. Outcomes included: elements for an implementation plan to be further developed by ICLEI – Local Governments for Sustainability; and a road map towards, and an outline of, the second City Biodiversity Summit, to be held in conjunction with the 11th meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the CBD. Discussions also addressed: opportunities for stakeholders to collaborate in the implementation of the plan of action; development of monitoring and assessment tools for the plan of action; outreach and communication, education and public awareness opportunities and examples; as well as decentralized cooperation.
