World Oceans Day provides an opportunity to honor, help protect, and conserve the Ocean. The UN marks the Day each year on 8 June through an annual event which provides an opportunity to celebrate the importance of the Ocean and to better understand how to interact with it in a sustainable manner.
Many countries have celebrated this Day since 1992, following the UN Conference on Environment and Development, held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. In 2008, the UN General Assembly (UNGA) decided that, as of 2009, 8 June would be designated World Oceans Day.
