World Bank to Complete Adaptation Project in Kiribati by December 2010
story highlights

Project aims to develop and demonstrate the systematic diagnosis of climate-related problems and the design of cost-effective adaptation measures.

September 2010: The World Bank has announced that Phase Two of its Kiribati Adaptation Project (KAP), which aims to prepare the country to face climate-related problems, is expected to be complete by December 2010.

The second phase of KAP has focused on identifying climate-related problems and designing cost-effective adaptation solutions. The project has five broad components: policy, planning, and information; reducing the vulnerability of the coastline including key public assets and ecosystems; developing and managing freshwater resources; providing technical assistance to build capacity at island and community level; and project management. The project was approved in June 2006 and is funded through a US$1.8 million grant from the Global Environment Facility (GEF), loans from Australia and New Zealand, and borrower funds.
