19 February 2009: The Executive Board of the World Health Organization (WHO) has approved a five-year work plan on climate change and health.

The work plan aims to: enhance capacity for monitoring and assessment; find strategies and activities that can protect health, especially that of the most vulnerable; and promote the sharing of knowledge. The work plan has four objectives: advocacy and awareness raising; partnership building with other UN organizations and sectors; promotion and support for the generation of scientific evidence; and strengthening of health systems to contend with climate impacts. Activities in the work plan are to be supported by WHO network countries, WHO Collaborating Centres, and other relevant institutions. Per the Executive Board’s request, the WHO Director-General is to aid in implementation and will report annually to the World Health Assembly, beginning in 2010. [The Work Plan]
