UNGA Adopts Ecotourism Resolution

The UN General Assembly's resolution on ecotourism calls for optimizing ecotourism's benefits particularly in African countries, the least developed countries (LDCs) and small island developing States (SIDS).

It also recognizes ecotourism as creating opportunities to conserve, protect and sustainably use biodiversity and natural areas; and notes its potential for directly contributing to achievement of the MDGs.

21 December 2012: The UN General Assembly has adopted a resolution on “Promotion of ecotourism for poverty eradication and environment protection.” By the text (A/67/441), adopted on 21 December 2012, the Assembly calls for optimizing ecotourism’s benefits particularly in African countries, the least developed countries (LDCs) and small island developing States (SIDS).

The Assembly recognizes ecotourism as creating opportunities to conserve, protect and sustainably use biodiversity and natural areas; and notes its potential for directly contributing to achievement of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).

The resolution was facilitated by Morocco and, according to UN News Center, sponsored by a record number of delegations (105).
