20 November 2015: The UNFCCC Secretariat has published a report (FCCC/SBI/2015/INF.16) on the workshop on potential ways to enhance capacity-building activities in preparation for the 43rd session of the Subsidiary Body for Implementation (SBI 43). The report will be considered by the SBI under its agenda item on capacity building under the Convention and the Kyoto Protocol.

The workshop was organized by the Secretariat on 17 October 2015 in Bonn, Germany, preceding the 11th part of the second session of the Ad Hoc Working Group on the Durban Platform for Enhanced Action (ADP 2-11) at the request of SBI 42. According to the report, the Secretariat organized a webinar and an informal meeting in advance to gather input for the agenda of the workshop.

At the workshop, representatives from Parties, Convention bodies, intergovernmental and non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and academia shared views and experiences on how the effectiveness of capacity-building efforts can be enhanced, as stated in the report. Kunihiko Shimada (Japan) and Bubu Pateh Jallow (The Gambia) co-facilitated the workshop, which consisted of two sessions on the state of play in the delivery of capacity building and institutional arrangements for capacity building, break-out groups and a closing plenary.

The report describes the main points of the presentations and discussion in the sessions and groups. Annexed to the report is the workshop programme and questions used to guide the break-out discussions. SBI 43 will be held from 1-4 December 2015 in conjunction with the 21st session of the Conference of the Parties (COP 21) to the UNFCCC in Paris, France.
