8 November 2011: The UNFCCC Secretariat has published the draft modalities and procedures for including carbon dioxide capture and storage in geological formations (CCS) as Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) project activities (FCCC/SBSTA/2011/4).

The draft was prepared in response to the request by the Conference of the Parties serving as the meeting of the Parties to the Kyoto Protocol (COP/MOP) that the Secretariat prepare draft modalities and procedures for including CCS as CDM projects, for consideration by the Subsidiary Body for Scientific and Technological Advice (SBSTA). The draft draws on relevant submissions from parties and admitted observer organizations, and the outcomes of a technical workshop held in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates (UAE), on 7-8 September 2011. The draft modalities and procedures will be presented as a draft decision of the COP/MOP and a draft annex to this decision, for consideration by the SBSTA at its 35th session, scheduled to take place at the end of 2011, in Durban, South Africa.
