UNESCO Releases April-June Edition of Voices Newsletter

This edition of the "Voices" newsletter features articles on the correlation between meat production and climate change, UNESCO-supported training aimed at helping journalists in Central Asia to raise awareness about environmental issues, and UNESCO's efforts in support for science education and research initiatives in the Maldives.

30 May 2011: The UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) has released the April-June edition of its newsletter Voices, which reports on UNESCO’s activities in the Asia Pacific region, and features articles on science education and research in the Maldives, the environmental and health impacts of livestock production, and media workshops on coverage of environmental issues and the impact of climate change.

The article “Beefing about Meat” highlights the correlation between meat production and climate change. It also points to other impacts of livestock production, such as soil erosion and deforestation. The article “Making Climate Change Headline News” reports on UNESCO-supported training aimed at helping journalists in Central Asia to raise awareness about environmental issues. Two media workshops were held in Kazakhstan and Tajikistan to develop journalists’ skills in research and analysis, and their presentation of balanced, contextualized coverage of environmental issues and the impacts of climate change.

Finally, the article “Maldives Chart Scientific Route to Progress” highlights UNESCO’s efforts in support for science education and research initiatives to respond to different challenges in the Maldives. [Publication: Voices Asia Pacific Nº26] [UNESCO Press Release]
