UNESCO IOC Takes Stock of West African Coastal Adaptation Project
story highlights

The closing seminar of the Adaptation to Climate Change in Coastal zones of West Africa (ACCC), organized by UNESCO IOC, discussed experiences in implementing measures to strengthen the resilience of vulnerable communities to the impacts of climate change on coastal resources in Cape Verde, the Gambia, Guinea Bissau, Mauritania and Senegal.

13 June 2012: The Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC) of the UN Educational Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) has convened a seminar to analyze the results of a project titled Adaptation to Climate Change in Coastal zones of West Africa (ACCC), discuss ways to fill gaps identified during the project, and agree on future action.

Seminar participants considered experiences in implementing measures to strengthen the resilience of vulnerable communities to the impacts of climate change on coastal resources in the five ACCC countries, namely Cape Verde, the Gambia, Guinea Bissau, Mauritania and Senegal. Presentations focused on experiences from coastal managers, scientists, engineers on the implementation of concrete adaptation techniques during the first phase of the project (2008-2012).

These outcomes will be made available to decision makers as a guide on adaptation options in coastal areas, aiming to expand the intervention possibilities of stakeholders, and to open perspectives for addressing coastal erosion issues in the context of a more holistic approach to environmental management.
ACCC is funded by the Global Environment Facility (GEF) and implemented by UNESCO IOC and the UN Development Programme (UNDP). The seminar was held from 12-13 June 2012, in Dakar, Senegal. [UNESCO IOC Press Release] [ACCC Website]
