unesco-kiost13 May 2014: The UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization’s Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (UNESCO-IOC) and the Korea Institute of Ocean Science and Technology (KIOST) signed an agreement to strengthen their collaboration on ocean carbon monitoring and research activities through the continuation of the Ocean Carbon Sources and Sinks project.

The second phase of this project will continue to be based on the project’s three pillars: ocean acidification; ocean carbon observation and monitoring; and coastal blue carbon. Through the project, UNESCO-IOC and KIOST aim to align carbon measurement and track the impacts of higher levels of carbon dioxide in the ocean. The project will also work to raise public awareness on the threats that increased atmospheric and marine carbon dioxide pose to human and ocean health.

The Republic of Korea has provided support for both phases of the project. [UNESCO Press Release] [KOSIT Website]
