February 2012: The UN Environment Programme (UNEP)/GRID-Arendal Marine Programme has released the February 2012 edition of its newsletter, which features an article on The Economics of Ecosystems and Biodiversity (TEEB) Oceans study.

The newsletter notes that UNEP/GRID-Arendal is collaborating with Duke University’s Nicholas Institute for Environmental Policy Solutions to provide insights about the benefits of a TEEB for the Oceans study. UNEP/GRID-Arendal’s contribution is a discussion paper, titled “Why Value the Oceans?” The paper identifies the types of marine management issues and policy that require better information on the economics of marine ecosystems and biodiversity.

The newsletter’s “map of the month” focuses on modelling habitat suitability for the humpback whale in the Southeast and Northeast Pacific. UNEP/GRID-Arendal also announces that it is extending, until 16 March 2012, the deadline for sending maps made through the use of the OCEANIDS project.
