13 September 2012: The UN Environment Programme (UNEP)/GRID-Arendal Marine Programme has released the August 2012 edition of its newsletter (Marine Newsletter #7), including an update on capacity building activities as part of the West Africa Training and Capacity Building Programme for the Establishment of the Outer Limits of the Continental Shelf Beyond 200 Nautical Miles.

According to the newsletter, the UNEP/GRID-Arendal Marine Programme convened the Second Technical Training Workshop under the Programme from 27 August-7 September, in Arendal, Norway. The workshop focused on the technical steps required to analyze the base of slope and select foot of slope points along the West African margin, which are fully supported by data, the newsletter notes.

The newsletter also features a “Map of the Month” on manganese nodules located in the South Pacific – rock concretions on the sea floor formed of concentric layers of iron and manganese hydroxides around a core. Some of these nodules are being assessed by governments and industry as potential sites for mining. [UNEP/GRID-Arendal Marine Newsletter #7]
