16 February 2009: The UN Environment Programme (UNEP) has released the UNEP Year Book 2009, which highlights environmental trends and relevant innovation, and points to the need for a low carbon economy.
On climate change, the Year Book notes that: the Arctic sea-ice left after the summer thaw was 30% lower than the average over the last 30 years; the Greenland ice sheet annually is melting 100 cubic km more than can be explained by natural melting; and studies are suggesting the more carbon could be stored in permafrost than previously estimated.
Speaking about the Year Book, Achim Steiner, UNEP Executive Director, stated that it “serves as a reminder to the international community as to why a Green Economy is so urgently needed.” He also highlighted that that the report showcases some examples of “the power of positive policies” that will help shape a low carbon future.
