© UNEP23 September 2009: The UN Environment Programme (UNEP) has announced that sixteen new umbrella organizations, including cities, cooperatives, railways, postal services, industry and civil society associations, have joined the Climate Neutral Network – an initiative to promote global action to de-carbonize our economies and societies.

The announcement came on Go Carbon Neutral Day on 23 September, held as part of Global Climate Week, 21-25 September 2009. The new umbrella groups joining the network include: ICLEI – Local Governments for Sustainability, a network of 1,078 cities worldwide; American College & University Presidents’ Climate Commitment, a network of 650 American colleges and universities; International Union of Railways (UIC), the worldwide international organization of the railway sector with 199 members across all five continents; and Universal Postal Union (UPU), an intergovernmental organization with 191 member countries and the United Nations specialized agency for international postal services.
