In a message delivered to mark the mark the International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon drew links among efforts to mitigate climate change, the outcomes of the UN Conference on Sustainable Development (UNCSD, or Rio+20) and the Montreal Protocol.
He underscored that “the Montreal Protocol highlights the benefits of pursuing an inclusive Green Economy.”
16 September 2012: The Secretariat of the Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer (Montreal Protocol) celebrated the International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer on 16 September 2012. The UN Environment Programme (UNEP) marked the Day with the release of a newsletter titled “Protecting Our Atmosphere for Generations to Come: 25 Years of the Montreal Protocol.”
The 24-page document summarizes key Montreal Protocol achievements over the past 25 years and highlights the current challenges faced by the Protocol. It includes articles by Montreal Protocol Executive Secretary Marco Gonzales, and the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) Executive Secretary Christiana Figueres.
In a message delivered to mark the Day, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon drew links among efforts to mitigate climate change, the outcomes of the UN Conference on Sustainable Development (UNCSD, or Rio+20) and the Montreal Protocol. He underscored that “the Montreal Protocol highlights the benefits of pursuing an inclusive Green Economy” and that “science-based policy making, the precautionary approach, common but differentiated responsibilities and equity within and between generations –can benefit all nations.” He urged Governments and all partners to apply the same spirit to the other environment and development challenges.
