UNEP20 June 2012: The UN Environment Programme (UNEP), in collaboration with the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), the Food and Agricultural Organization of the UN (FAO), the World Bank, the World Food Programme (WFP) and the World Resources Institute (WRI), released a synthesis report titled “Avoiding Future Famines: Strengthening the Ecological Basis of Food Security through Sustainable Food Systems,” on the sidelines of the UN Conference on Sustainable Development (UNCSD, or Rio+20).

The report aims to ensure that the focus of the food security debate includes consideration of the resource base and ecosystem services, which it says are being undermined by overfishing, unsustainable water use and other human activities. The report also frames the debate in the context of the green economy, calling for food production and consumption practices that ensure productivity without undermining ecosystem services.

Part 1 of the report focuses on current factors undermining the ecological basis of food security, and Part 2 of the report focuses on moving towards sustainable systems within the context of the green economy.
