3 May 2010: The UN Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) has reported on the development of the Third Aral Sea Basin Programme, a regional action plan for 2011- 2015 that will improve preparedness to address new challenges, including climate change.

The Weekly newsletter of the UNECE reports on a meeting of the five member countries of the International Fund for Saving the Aral Sea (IFAS), held in Almaty, Kazakhstan, from 20-22 April 2010, which discussed steps aimed at improving regional structures and legal frameworks for water resources management and work on the new Third Aral Sea Basin Programme. The Programme will also cover: integrated water resources management, environmental protection, socioeconomic issues, and institutional and legal strengthening. The Programme is expected to contribute to the achievement of the Millennium Development Goals, and foster integrated water resources management at the national, river-basin and regional levels.
