UNECE Convenes Expert Group on Education for Sustainable Development

The UNECE Expert Group on Competences in Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) completed the drafting of core competences for sustainable development educators and recommendations for policy makers.

17 January 2011: The weekly newsletter of the UN Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) for the period 17-21 January 2011 includes a report on the Fifth Meeting of the UNECE Expert Group on Competences in Education for Sustainable Development (ESD), which convened in Geneva, Switzerland, from 10-12 January 2011.

Experts from academia and intergovernmental and non-governmental organizations finalized the drafting of core educator competences in ESD to facilitate the integration of ESD into educational programs at all levels. The experts also developed recommendations for policy makers to support the creation of an enabling environment for the development of educator competences across all sectors of education, with a particular focus on formal education. The outcomes of the Expert Group’s work will be presented for approval at the UNECE Steering Committee on ESD in April 2011. [The Newsletter]
