The UN Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) and the Regional Cooperation Council (RCC) Secretariat, with the support of the Global Water Partnership Mediterranean and the International Sava River Basin Commission, co-organized an International Workshop on Integrated Transboundary Water Resources Management in South Eastern Europe (SEE) Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina, from 18-20 May 2009.

Opening the workshop, Hido Biscevic, RCC Secretary General, underlined that promoting cooperation on ecologically sound management of transboundary waters and their reasonable and equitable use “is the way to avoid conflicts and promote development.” He stressed the vulnerability of the SEE region to climate change, noting the increased frequency and severity of droughts, floods and other extreme weather conditions. During the workshop, participants were presented with several project ideas and identified the most urgent actions to prevent, control and reduce negative transboundary impacts on human health, safety, nature and socioeconomic conditions.
