29 November 2010: The UN Development Programme (UNDP) is working with the Government of Bangladesh and local communities to plant mangroves along the southern delta’s coastline, as a protection against sea level rise and the increased impacts of storms caused by climate change.
The UNDP programme trains local people to run mangrove nurseries and manage forests, and then pays them. It will have benefited 5,000 families by the end of 2010. UNDP underscores that climate change threatens to undo decades of progress toward poverty reduction and hinders progress towards attaining the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). [UNDP Press Release]
