Under-Secretary General for Economic and Social Affairs Highlights Auditors’ Role in Enabling Sustainable Development

15 July 2011: Sha Zukang, UN Under-Secretary General for Economic and Social Affairs, recently highlighted that Supreme Audit Institutions (SAIs), which promote sound financial management and overall accountability, are part of the solution to global problems.

Speaking at the 21st session of the UN-International Organization of SAIs (UN-INTOSAI) Symposium on “Effective Practices of Cooperation of SAIs and Citizens to Enhance Public Accountability,” held in Vienna, Austria, from 13-15 July 2011, Sha highlighted the global problems of ocean damage, water scarcity, and food and oil prices. He said, “without good governance, sustainable development will not be sustained,” and accountability and transparency are part of the enabling environment for sustainable development.
