3 December 2009: The Secretariat of the UN Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) has released the third issue of its bi-monthly newsletter, UNCCD News. The issue includes UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon’s statement to the UNCCD Conference of the Parties, in which he noted that, when “world leaders gather in Copenhagen in December, the land agenda – and most of all the people who rely on the land for their jobs, sustenance and very survival – should be part of the picture.”
The issue also includes, inter alia, interviews with Uriel Safriel (Israel) and Mary Seely (Namibia), and a story about the launch by the European Space Agency of the Soil Moisture and Ocean Salinity (SMOS) Earth Explorer satellite, which will measure moisture in the Earth’s landmasses and salinity in the oceans.[UNCCD News Issue 3]
