UN CC:LearnUN-HABITATWHO3 December 2015: UN CC:Learn, the One UN Climate Change Learning Partnership, and the UN Human Settlements Programme (UN-HABITAT) launched an e-learning module on climate change and cities. In addition, UN:CC Learn and the World Health Organization (WHO) jointly developed and launched a learning module on climate change and health.

The climate change and cities module focuses on how climate change affects cities and urban areas and how cities contribute to climate change. It also addresses adaptation and mitigation opportunities in urban planning and presents examples of how cities can play a critical role in combatting climate change.

The climate change and health module explains how climate change, climate variability and weather affect human health and describes how adaptation and mitigation measures and policies can benefit human health. It provides examples of how countries have responded to climate-related health challenges.

The modules are available on the UN CC:Learn website as part of its six-part introductory course on climate change.

Also with regard to cities and climate change, UN-HABITAT launched the ‘Guiding Principles for City Climate Action Planning’ on the sidelines of the Paris Climate Change Conference. The Guidelines provide ideas and suggestions for how cities can address climate change while also achieving other long-term goals, such as socio-economic development and environmental protection. According to the Guidelines, city climate action planning should be ambitious, inclusive, fair, comprehensive and integrated, relevant, actionable, evidence-based, and transparent and verifiable.

UN CC:Learn also announced that the following Resource Guides containing complementary materials for two modules of the same e-course have been updated and upgraded with technical advice from the World Meteorological Organization (WMO): ‘The Scientific Fundamentals of Climate Change’; and ‘Predicting and Projecting Climate Change.’ [UN-HABITAT Press Release on UN CC:Learn] [UN CC:Learn Press Release] [E-Learning Platform] [Publication: Guiding Principles for Climate City Planning Action] [UN CC:Learn Press Release, 9 December] [Publication: Resource Guide for Advanced Learning on the Scientific Fundamentals of Climate Change] [Publication: Resource Guide for Advanced Learning on Predicting and Projecting Climate Change]
