28 August 2009: The UN Secretary-General’s remarks on the occasion of the 30th anniversary of the Vienna International Centre emphasized its historical contribution and the fact that it will continue to be a hub for addressing human security issues at the heart of Europe. He noted that the premises inaugurated last year possess state-of-the-art technology, which are greener and allow for the use of natural light, promoting a cleaner UN.

Following his trip to Vienna, the UN Secretary-General will travel to the Arctic to generate awareness of the issue of climate change. He stressed that the world must “Seal the Deal” for a global solution for the climate threat and called for a renewed multilateralism focused on the global common good.
The Vienna International Centre is one of the major UN premises globally and houses the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), the Comprehensive Nuclear Test Ban Treaty Organization (CTBTO), the UN Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), the UN Commission on International Trade Law (UNCITRAL), and the UN Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), which is helping industries to adopt clean technologies.
