8 November 2010: In a message to the 2010 International Finance Forum in Beijing, China, delivered on his behalf by Renata Lok-Dessallien, Resident Coordinator in China, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon underlined that global economic management “can no longer afford to neglect the most vulnerable or disadvantaged.”

He called attention to the UN Conference on Sustainable Development (UNCSD, also called Rio+20), to be held in 2012, and noted that the the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) constitute a blueprint for achieving sustainable development. He highlighted two “tests” in the coming weeks, the Group of 20 (G-20) Summit in Seoul, Republic of Korea, and the UN climate change negotiations in Cancun, Mexico, at the end of the year.

On Cancun, he called for: progressing on those issues where there is consensus; and taking steps to address the “trust gap.” He underscored the costs of delaying action and stressed the need for urgent progress on fast-start financing and longer term funding for mitigation and adaptation.
