August 2013: The UN Collaborative Programme on Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation in Developing Countries (UN-REDD) has published the August edition of its newsletter, which highlights its activities in Ecuador, Viet Nam and Mesoamerica.
The newsletter announces that Viet Nam will be the first country to enter into Phase II of the UN-REDD Programme, and will begin implementing its National REDD+ Action Programme in six provinces over the next three years.
It also discusses a workshop held in Ecuador on the inclusion of sustainable livestock as a potential REDD+ activity, which advanced inter-ministerial cooperation in the country through the negotiations framework between Ecuador and the Governments of Norway and Germany on compensation for climate change mitigation activities under the REDD Early Movers (REM).
The newsletter also features a workshop held in Mexico on identifying needs and priorities for forest monitoring and measurement, reporting, and verification (MRV) in the Mesoamerican region. The newsletter says that the workshop identified four key areas to support the development of a South-South Cooperation Strategy: data sharing; sharing of lessons learned; technological platforms; and policy/technical dialogues.
Finally, the newsletter discusses a study commissioned by the UN-REDD Programme on increasing the role of women in Viet Nam’s forest institutions. [Publication: UN-REDD Newsletter Issue #40]
