The announcement was made during a disaster risk reduction (DRR) training workshop co-convened by UNISDR, the Government of Tunisia and the UN Development Programme (UNDP).
According to UNISDR, Tunisia has recently unpredictable climatic events such as a cold wave and heavy floods.
It is hoped that Tunisia's efforts will provide information on the links between climate change, extreme weather events and water scarcity in Tunisia and the wider Arab region.
31 August 2012: The UN International Strategy for Disaster Reduction (UNISDR) has announced that the Government of Tunisia has committed to establish a National Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR), bringing the total number of national platforms worldwide to 82.
Tunisia also announced it will institutionalize a national disaster loss database, which is expected to: strengthen understanding of Tunisia’s natural hazards, vulnerable areas and risk factors; and help in defining measures to reduce weather-related hazards such as droughts and floods, as well as climate-induced sea level rise.
