21 July 2011: The UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) has reported that St. Kitts and Nevis intends to become a member of the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC).

The Federation’s Permanent Delegate to UNESCO, David Doyle, underlined that by joining IOC, St. Kitts and Nevis will gain access to policy experts’ aid and advice in disaster risk reduction (DRR), in particular tsunamis, storm surges, and other coastal hazards, through the development and implementation of adaptation measures aimed at increasing the resilience to climate change of vulnerable coastal communities.
