A Special Meeting of States parties to the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) was held at UN Headquarters in New York, US, on 6 March 2009, and elected Jin-Hyun Paik (Republic of Korea) as a new member of the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea (ITLOS).

The election took place to fill the vacancy created by the death of Judge Choon-Ho Park (Republic of Korea), and Paik will hold office for the remainder of his predecessor’s nine-year term, which expires on 30 September 2014.
