26 July 2011: The Secretariat of the Pacific Community (SPC) has reported that the SPC-GIZ (Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit) Coping with Climate Change in the Pacific Islands Region Programme is providing support to the Government of Vanuatu in finalizing the country’s first National Climate Change Adaptation Strategy (NCCAS). The strategy seeks to position Vanuatu to cope with climate change in the agriculture, forestry, environment, water resources, meteorology and livestock sectors.

According to SPC, impacts of climate change are already being felt by Vanuatu’s economy, health and society. In response, communities, individuals and businesses around the country have begun adapting to these changes. The NCCAS synthesizes the vision of existing plans, including the National Adaptation Programme of Action (NAPA) and the Disaster National Action Plan, into a coherent long term strategy for Vanuatu.
