The Secretariat of the Pacific Community (SPC) held a workshop at the Kiribati Institute of Technology to train government officers to use cost-benefit analysis (CBA) as a framework to improve decision making and project quality, in particular for projects affected by climate change.
29 January 2013: The Secretariat of the Pacific Community (SPC) held a workshop at the Kiribati Institute of Technology to train government officers to use cost-benefit analysis (CBA) as a framework to improve decision making and project quality, in particular for projects affected by climate change.
The workshop focused on two analysis, namely alternative energy options on Kiribati Island, and fish aggregating device deployment. Kurinati Robuti, Kiribati National Economic Planning Office (NEPO), underscored the lack of know-how to carry out CBAs and welcomed the training.
According to SPC, climate change is projected to lead to a decrease in coastal fisheries productivity but an increase in skipjack tuna in the waters around Kiribati. The training will guide the Fisheries Department in the deployment of near-shore fish aggregating devices (FADs) that are recommended to increase access of local fishers to tuna and other oceanic fish.
