SPC Announces Donation of Lab Equipment for Regional Forest Tree Seed Centre

The Centre aims to facilitate the safe and efficient exchange of seeds of selected trees among Pacific Island countries and territories.

12 May 2011: The Secretariat of the Pacific Community (SPC) has announced that the Japanese Government, through the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), has donated laboratory equipment to the SPC for its new Regional Forest Tree Seed Centre.

According to SPC, the equipment includes a walk-in cold storage facility, a drying oven, a microscope, electric scales, water distillation apparatus, GIS software, GPS devices, computers, a digital camera, and other laboratory equipment.

SPC says the Forest Tree Seed Centre represents a vital component of the conservation and management of genetic resources in the Pacific. The Centre aims to facilitate the safe and efficient exchange of seeds of selected trees among Pacific Island countries and territories. The Centre will also undertake research in seed collection, treatment, storage and propagation. [SPC Press Release]
