The Secretariat of the Pacific Community (SPC) has announced a regional partnership with the Government of Japan, focusing on the provision of technical support to the forestry sector in the Pacific.

4 March 2011: The Secretariat of the Pacific Community (SPC) has announced a regional partnership with the Government of Japan, focusing on the provision of technical support to the forestry sector in the Pacific.

According to SPC, the collaborative efforts will focus on forest monitoring, using remote sensing technologies as part of the REDD-readiness programme (reducing emissions from deforestation and forest degradation), protected area management, conservation and management of forest genetic resources, and management of invasive plant species.

In addition, a joint country strategy will be prepared with Papua New Guinea, and a Regional Tree Seed Centre in SPC will be established. [SPC Press Release]
