January 2013: As announced by the Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), South Africa has ratified the Nagoya Protocol on access and benefit-sharing (ABS), bringing the number of ratifications to 12.

South Africa deposited its instrument of ratification on 10 January 2013. Ethiopia, Fiji, Gabon, India, Jordan, Lao PDR, Mauritius, Mexico, Panama, Rwanda and the Seychelles have already ratified the Nagoya Protocol, which will enter into force 90 days after the deposit of the 50th instrument of ratification.
