12 December 2012: The Stockholm International Water Institute (SIWI), the Northern Dimension Foundation, the Institute of Economy of the Russian Academy of Sciences, the Global Water Partnership (GWP), the Swedish Agency for Marine and Water Management and the Stockholm Environment Institute (SEI) are partnering to improve transboundary river management in the Eastern Baltic Sea Region to address the impacts of agriculture, the energy sector and industry on the health of Baltic Sea ecosystems.

The project, “Building a framework for collective action in the management of the transboundary waters in Kaliningrad, Russia, Lithuania and Poland (Baltic Sea region),” will target the Neman and Pregola rivers, both identified as needing improved water management.

The project will develop partnerships to create water management options and green and smart growth investments in the river systems. The project aims to assist stakeholders in seeing degraded water resources as opportunities for investment, and to facilitate dialogue and cooperation between officials on the transboundary waters of Kaliningrad Oblast, Poland, Lithuania and other Baltic Sea stakeholders.
