1 December 2010: In meetings on 30 November and 1 December 2010, the UN General Assembly’s Second Committee (Economic and Financial) concluded its 65th Session, taking action on a draft titled “Follow-up to and implementation of the Mauritius Strategy for the Further Implementation of the Programme of Action for the Sustainable Development of Small Island Developing States.”

In total, the Committee adopted 40 draft resolutions and three draft decisions during the present session. If adopted, the text will have the UN General Assembly (UNGA): urge full and effective implementation of the outcome document adopted on 25 September 2010 by the High-level Review Meeting of the UNGA; call upon the international community to enhance support for efforts by small island developing States (SIDS) to adapt to the adverse impacts of climate change, including by providing dedicated sources of financing, capacity-building and technology transfer; urge Governments and all relevant regional and intergovernmental organizations, UN entities, global financial institutions and the Global Environment Facility (GEF) to take timely action to effectively implement and follow up the Mauritius Strategy (MSI); call on all relevant regional and intergovernmental organizations to enhance cooperation, coherence and coordination through the Inter-agency Consultative Group on SIDS, to strengthen support for them in further advancing the Mauritius Strategy; and underscore the importance of providing the SIDS Unit with adequate, stable and predictable funding and staffing so as to implement its mandates fully and effectively.
