Samoa to Host Third SIDS Global Conference

Samoa and Fiji, the two governments which offered to host the 2014 Conference, said that Samoa will serve as host for the Conference, while Fiji will host the preparatory meetings.

This is the first SIDS Global Conference to convene in the Pacific.

Agreement to hold the Conference was an outcome of the UN Conference on Sustainable Development (UNCSD, or Rio+20).

29 September 2012: The Government of Samoa has announced that Pacific representatives have agreed that Samoa will host the Third Small Island Developing States (SIDS) Global Conference, scheduled to convene in 2014, while Fiji will host the preparatory meetings. Samoa and Fiji both offered to host the Conference, in their statements at the UN Conference on Sustainable Development (UNCSD, or Rio+20).

According to a joint press release from the two governments, the agreement was made on the sidelines of the 67th UN General Assembly (UNGA) on 29 September 2012, in New York, US. Samoa thanked Fiji for its support to host the conference.

The first SIDS Global Conference was held in Barbados in 1994, and the second in Mauritius in 2005. This is the first SIDS Global Conference to convene in the Pacific. Agreement to hold the Conference was an outcome of the UNCSD. [Government of Samoa Press Release] [IISD RS Story on Host Offers]
