Ramsar Releases Wetland Disease Manual

The 360-page Ramsar Wetland Disease Manual offers practical guidance on managing healthy wetlands, and targets primarily wetland managers and wetland policy makers.

It recognizes the key role that wetland managers play in prevention of disease problems, and highlights the importance of integrating disease management into wetland management plans.

11 June 2012: The Secretariat of the Convention on Wetlands of International Importance (Ramsar Convention) has released Ramsar Technical Report No. 7, titled “Ramsar Wetland Disease Manual: Guidelines for Assessment, Monitoring and Management of Animal Disease in Wetlands.”

The 360-page publication was prepared by the Wildfowl and Wetlands Trust (WWT) and a broad range of contributing authors and editors on behalf of the Ramsar Convention and its Scientific and Technical Review Panel (STRP). The manual aims to provide practical guidance on managing healthy wetlands, and targets wetland managers and wetland policy makers. It recognizes the key role that wetland managers play in prevention of disease problems, and highlights the importance of integrating disease management into wetland management plans.

The manual also includes principles of disease management, specific and generic practices for preventing and controlling diseases in wetlands, user-friendly factsheets on a wide range of priority animal diseases of wetlands, and numerous case studies on disease management in wetlands.
