18 April 2012: The Secretariat of the Convention on Wetlands of International Importance (Ramsar Convention) has released a briefing note on avoiding, mitigating and compensating for wetland loss, which is a supporting background document to Draft Resolution XI.9, on “An Integrated Framework and guidelines for avoiding, mitigating and compensating for wetland losses,” proposed by the Ramsar Standing Committee for consideration by the 11th meeting of the Conference of the Contracting Parties (COP 11).

The brief is the third in the Ramsar Scientific and Technical Briefing Notes series, which is prepared by the Convention’s Scientific and Technical Review Panel (STRP). The brief provides examples of the variety of approaches that Ramsar Parties have taken in adopting the “avoid-mitigate-compensate” sequence in laws and policies throughout the Ramsar regions, ranging from wetland-specific and biodiversity-related laws and policies to more general environmental impact assessment instruments.

COP 11 will take place in Bucharest, Romania, from 6-13 July 2012. [Publication: Briefing Note 3] [Ramsar Scientific and Technical Briefing Notes Series Website]
