story highlights

The Ramsar Secretariat has reported on the successful conclusion of a project on the Lake Chilika, India, that aimed to: develop a framework for an integrated management plan; and design and monitor an evaluation framework within the Chilika Development Authority (CDA) and other participating organizations.

21 March 2012: The Secretariat of the Convention on Wetlands of International Importance (Ramsar Convention) has reported on the successful conclusion of a project that aimed to develop a framework for an integrated management plan of Lake Chilika, the largest coastal lagoon on the east coast of India in the state of Orissa. The Lake is a designated Ramsar site since 1981.

The project was initiated in 2004 to develop a single management plan to restore the ecological character of the lake while providing economic benefits to local communities. It was led by Wetlands International – South Asia (WISA) and the Chilika Development Authority with support from Ramsar’s Small Grants Fund. The project also aimed at designing and monitoring an evaluation framework within the Chilika Development Authority (CDA) and other participating organizations.

The management planning framework was developed through an extensive consultation process, expert input and stakeholder endorsement. It was then endorsed by the Governing Body of the Chilika Development Authority. [Ramsar Press Release]
