16 October 2012: A publication of the World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD) highlights ways business can support government efforts to deliver on the Aichi Biodiversity targets. The report was launched at the 11th meeting of the Conference of the Parties (COP 11) to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), taking place in Hyderabad, India.

“Picking up the Pace – Accelerating public policies for positive outcomes” builds on “Effective biodiversity and ecosystem policy and regulation,” a publication produced by WBCSD for CBD COP 10. It seeks to improve policy-makers’ awareness of the positive and negative business experiences of biodiversity and ecosystem policy. It also highlights lessons that can be learned from experiences to date, and presents a policy process framework demonstrating how government and policy-makers can positively engage business in the policy-making process.

Developed through a review of case studies on biodiversity and ecosystem policy implementation, the report provides nine key messages for policy-makers that should be considered at each stage of the policy process, in order to ensure win-win outcomes. They are: enter early dialogue with business; provide commercial benefits; consider policy options in the context of the overall policy landscape; provide targeted technical and financial support; clarify property and access rights; facilitate ongoing multi-stakeholder dialogue; communicate results; develop strong monitoring frameworks; and give business time to adapt.
